This book is honestly incoherent. The bits and pieces of actual correspondence are great and all, but I can find them in a dozen other books. I hoped to enjoy the more personal take that came from the fact that the book was written/compiled by one of Hamilton's early descendants, but this didn't prove to be a boon (in fact at one point the author cites a letter FROM THE TIME OF HAMILTON'S AFFAIR WITH MARIA REYNOLDS as proof of his devotion and solicitude towards his wife... Ouch, talk about an unreliable narrator). The book doesn't really follow a logical timeline or go subject-by-subject in any kind of thoughtful way, and the printing I tried to read seems to be missing pieces all over the place (the page numbers indicate that this isn't a printing error, but rather that certain passages were truncated or left out by the publisher). In multiple places, a paragraph is cut short and never picked up again. All in all this was a severe disappointment. I made it about a third of the way through the book and am finally willing to concede defeat.

Having read the story of Alexander Hamilton written by historians, I was thrilled to read so many letters written by Hamilton and his relatives, friends and enemies. This helped clarify some of the history gleaned from public records. This was written by Hamilton's grandson who possesses many of the documents that are transcribed in the book. One side note: The eloquence of the letter writing in the day should put us all to shame. How do you end a letter or "text" today? How about "accept my humble adieu and know that I am always your loyal and trusted servant"? Very common ending to letters in the 18th and 19th century. Where has technology taken us? Adieu for now my fellow readers.

Couldn't Get Into This One Hamilton played a great part in our history. However, I couldn't get into this book. Maybe it was the attention to detail, I don't know. But after about 25% I had to skim this book in order to finish it.
