This book tells the story of three young sailors as they challenge for the America's Cup. Inky, Rafe and Fabian are part of a British underdog crew bought together by the mighty Mack - British sailor extraordinaire - in order to try and beat Henry Luter. It is written very much like Jilly Cooper - choosing a little-known competitive sport known for its glamour and peopling the story with larger-than-life caricatures in a rambling plot where the underdog triumphs. The difference is that Mason seemed unable to sustain her novel over the fairly hefty 600 pages - towards the end it was clearly sign-posted who would pair off with whom and of course we all knew that the Brits would triumph in the America's Cup. Mason's strength is in introducing her characters (although they all seem to have ridiculous names - as well as the three main characters, there is also Milly, Bee, Hattie, Custard, Ava and a number of others). I enjoyed the story right up to the point that they went to Valencia to challenge for the Cup. Each new character was given life and I felt invested in all of them. However, when they reached Valencia everything became about the races and the characters seemed incidental. The action of the races was a little boring to read - I don't have a huge interest in sailing and this book did little to change that. I was confused by a number of the sailing references and mixed up my minor characters, not remembering who was a grinder and who was a trimmer. I would also criticise Mason's efforts to pair up simply everybody. Even the two oldies ended up getting married. Some of the love stories were far-fetched as well, including Custard and Saffron (where Mason threw in an incident of child abuse in an ill-conceived attempt to de-fluff the story). I did find Rafe and Hattie very sweet, and enjoyed how their story progressed, and Milly was a lovely character who deserved the happy ending. Altogether, nothing more than a competent effort, but not a book I shall hurry back to read again (unlike my Jilly Coopers).

I have to admit it took me several years to "make" myself read this... I have Sarah's other books and adored them. They are laugh out loud funny! I read reviews of sea fever, and wondered whether or not I should read it, as most aren't too favorable. I decided that out of respect for this author I loved, I would try it. So I ordered the book. And it sat on my "to-read" shelf for far too long. I was heading out for a beach trip and picking which books to take when my eyes alighted on sea fever. I had told myself I would read it this summer, so on a whim i threw it to my book bag. I decided to start the 590+ page book on the road trip yesterday, and see how far I could get without putting it down. (believe me I wasn't expecting too much). The first chapter or 2 are hard to get through, but after that it was great! It's humorous, but not in the same way as Playing James etc. I really enjoyed this book, and thought it the perfect beach read since it dealt so much with the sea. All that said, I wish we'd have had a bit more closure on Inky & her family at the end of the book. But overall, great! And I am embarrassed i put off reading it so long!! So if you are a Sarah M. fan, take a chance on her and READ this book!!!!!

Mack at times despairs during the rigorous training but then all of a sudden this mis matched team begin to show a spark of magic and start to feel a competitive spirit. A whole host of believable and engaging characters all become an interwoven part of the yachting picture and you live through the highs and lows of all their lives just as you live the danger and excitement of the America's cup. But against this emerging background of friendship and teamwork an outside threat looms and could be an obstacle to Mack's dreams of winning for Britain. Henry Luter a prominent and ruthless billionaire also has his sights set on the cup and will stop at nothing to undermine the British team and thwart Mack's plans. Can Mack, the infamous nautical "playboy" Fabian Beaufort, the dashing and mysterious Rafe Louvel, Inky Pencarrow the first female involved in the cup race alongside a wealth of other charming characters routing for the underdog team be enough to thwart the evil Luter and bring success home to Britain? A wonderfully long read with a wicked and plot twisting storyline, well worth a read and is great for the long, hot days of summer.

Awful. I've read Sarah Mason's three other books (Playing James, The Party Season and High Society) and loved them. Made me laugh out loud the whole way through with characters I liked. Sea Fever had none of that. I felt too much was crammed in, I didn't care about the characters and I didn't particularly like any of them. Too much technical talk and I didn't notice the glossary at the end of the book until I had finished. Disappointing and I don't recommend it to anyone - unless you've got a ha Awful. This was quite an interesting read - having not know anything about sailing - never mind the 'Americas Cup'!! It was quite long, and did take me ages to read - but I did enjoy it, and loved the 'cast' at the beginning of the book which made it easier for me with all the characters that were in it!

An epic in the manner of Jilly Cooper's Riders or Polo, which is one of the greatest honours I can bestow on a book! You will yearn for the sea and the thrill of the race. A really fun book
